Residential Propane - Latest Price
State outlines: US Atlas / US Census Bureau. Regions: EIA PADD definitions.

Reference routes: EIA / US DOT, January 2020. Selected systems include propane and other natural gas liquids; this is not a complete or current operating-network map.
Hub markers show approximate city-level locations. Sarnia is in Ontario, Canada; US PADD price coverage does not extend to it.
EIA values are the latest reported values from EIA’s website. Centri estimates are based on market samples.
Where does my propane come from?
Your local delivery truck is the final link in a much larger network. Before propane reaches your tank, it moves through processing plants, storage facilities, and regional distribution systems.
Propane is recovered during natural gas processing and crude oil refining. At fractionation plants, a mixture of natural gas liquids is separated into individual products, including propane. It travels as a liquid, allowing large quantities of fuel to be stored and transported. Explore the Department of Energy’s supply-chain backgrounder (PDF).
Production
Processing and refining recover propane for use as fuel.
Storage & transport
Storage sites connect to pipelines, railcars, trucks, and barges.
Local supply
Regional supplies reach the bulk plant used by your propane dealer.
Your tank
A smaller delivery truck, called a bobtail, brings propane to your home or business.
This is a simplified journey; individual delivery routes vary. See PERC’s explanation of propane storage and distribution.
How do pipelines, terminals, and storage hubs fit together?
The Department of Energy identifies Mont Belvieu, Texas, and Conway, Kansas, as major fractionation and storage hubs, with underground salt caverns used for storage. Pipelines carry bulk supplies toward regional markets; terminals receive, store, and transfer fuel for onward delivery. Northeast production and Canadian imports also contribute to regional supply. Read DOE’s infrastructure overview (2023).
For a broader view of these facilities, RBN Energy’s U.S. Propane Infrastructure Map covers fractionators, refineries, supply terminals, and major transmission pipelines across the lower 48 states.
Why does the supply chain matter when I order propane?
Storage helps bridge seasonal demand. During prolonged cold weather, many customers may need deliveries at once. Storms, transportation limits, and terminal loading capacity can slow replenishment even when fuel is available elsewhere. DOE explains these supply-chain constraints.
Turn that context into a better conversation.
Ask your dealer which terminals supply your area, what delivery lead time to allow, and how fees change for urgent orders. Pair those answers with your tank level and consumption history to plan your next quote request.
A PADD region or nearby pipeline does not identify the source of your particular delivery. Your dealer can explain their supply arrangements. Use the map’s price benchmarks as context when comparing your full delivered quotes.
Understanding propane prices near you.
Knowing what propane costs in your region gives you a better starting point for a dealer quote. Explore the map above, then compare the reporting dates, price basis, and fees before making a purchase.
The map starts with the five Petroleum Administration for Defense Districts, or PADDs. Select a region, then a state. The East Coast (PADD 1) also has three subregions: New England (1A), Central Atlantic (1B), and Lower Atlantic (1C). Explore each separately or return to the combined PADD 1 summary. Colors identify geography; they do not indicate expensive or inexpensive propane. National and regional figures remain separate benchmarks, even where a state has no published data.
What does an average propane price tell you?
An average describes a specific set of reported prices over a specific period. A local sample, a state survey, and a national benchmark can cover different customers and dates. Compare their sources and methods before comparing the numbers.
EIA's Heating Oil and Propane Update is one reference for residential price benchmarks. Coverage and publication dates matter: an unavailable local or state observation should not be filled in with a national figure and relabeled as local.
Check whether a report is residential retail or wholesale, whether taxes are included, and how many observations support it. These details help explain why a dealer's delivered quote may differ.
Compare the full delivered quote.
| Ask about | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Price per gallon | Confirm the quoted rate applies to your order quantity and delivery date. |
| Fees and taxes | Ask for delivery, minimum-order, emergency, and other charges separately. |
| Tank ownership | Clarify rental charges and any supply agreement attached to a leased tank. |
| Contract terms | Compare fixed, capped, introductory, and variable pricing on the same basis. |
| Delivery schedule | Confirm the delivery window and whether a different rate applies to urgent service. |
Effective delivered price per gallon = total quoted bill ÷ gallons delivered
Use the same quantity and delivery assumptions for each quote. A lower advertised per-gallon price can come with different fees or commitments.
Plan your next purchase with a better starting point.
Knowing your tank level and recent usage helps you decide when to request quotes. A propane tank monitor gives you remote visibility so you can plan ahead rather than discovering a low tank at the last moment.
